So, summer is here and thousands of you are clambering for the nearest salon to get your midyear style up to cut. Tana B has seen some strange trends come and go over the years but one recent anomaly which just won’t budge is grey hair dye.
Surely grey hair is a stage of womanhood no sane person wishes to face? Wrong – if anything, the act of dying your hair grey at a young age is killing the tired old stigma that embracing your aging barnet is both unattractive and unwanted. It’s been referred to by fashionistas as “Granny Chic” but when you’ve got the ranks of Lady Gaga, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna and Marina Diamandis all rocking grey locks and looking great, it’s hard to protest the charm.
So, why are ladies (and some gents of course) choosing to go grey? Well, first of all let’s face it – we’re all going to go grey one day, so why not check it out in your youth? Secondly, some older women just look fantastic with full and shiny grey hair that puts the efforts of those who desperate try to hide it to shame. Furthermore, with the social acceptance of grey hair in the fashion world as a cutting edge trend; this will ultimately open the doors for older women to engage in modelling and advertising. For example, Linda Rodin (who owns beauty line Rodin) has now re-entered the modelling arena thanks to the grey campaign helmed by younger beauties.
While grey hair has no doubt entered the ‘mainstream’ conscience, it remains a viable alternative style for young women and men who identify with gothic styles. Rather than dye their hair black, the alternative inclined are happy to embrace the cross-over appeal of grey hair and it’s really quite wonderful to witness.
What do you think of the grey hair trend?
